Tracing North sea fish in the entire cycle with the help of Schouw Informatisering
Etten-Leur, 06-06-2011 - On June 18, The Cathlocator will be presented at the IJmuiden Fish Auction. The CatchLocator is the latest development in offering a more transparent view of the Dutch fishing industry. It is a system that makes it possible to trace North sea fish in its entire cycle on the internet. Information about the catch location, ship, way of sorting and catching techniques is available at any moment by scanning a label barcode on the boxes of the fish. Barcode scanning terminals will be placed at several wholesale companies in the Netherlands so their customers can directly access information about the fish they are about to purchase.
Consumers can also access this data by entering the same barcode number that is printed on the packaging of their consumer fish at www.catchlocator.nl. It is also possible to scan the barcode with a smartphone.
The CatchLocator is an addition to the existing VCU CatchManagement System that allows (and often requires) fishermen to register all data about the fish (weight, sorting, etc) on board of the ship. GPS-coordinates are connected to the catch location and make it possible to create catch overviews that include the haul per day and route, (live) catch weight, amount of boxes, percentage and price.
The CathLocator is an initiative of Visserij Innovatie Platform (VIP). Companies that powered this initiative with content are Hanos, versvishandel Jan va As and CVU. Vekrasoft and Schouw Informatisering supplied this project with the technical backbone.
